UPSC Mains Exam Pattern
- • Total Papers: 9 (2 qualifying, 7 considered for ranking)
- • Essay Paper: 1 paper for 250 marks
- • General Studies Papers: 4 papers, each for 250 marks
- • Optional Subject Papers: 2 papers of 250 marks each
- • Language Papers: 2 qualifying papers (English and one regional language)
- • Total Marks: 1750 (plus 275 for the interview stage)

- • Paper A: One Indian language (chosen by the candidate) – 300 marks
- • Paper B: English – 300 marks

Paper I: Essay (250 marks)
Write two essays on topics chosen from a list, typically relating to current affairs, philosophy, or other social issues.
Paper II: General Studies I (250 marks)
Indian Heritage and Culture, History, and Geography of the World and Society
- Indian culture and history (from ancient to modern)
- World history (major events like revolutions, world wars)
- Post-independence Indian history
- Indian society (diversity, social empowerment, communalism)
- Geography (physical, economic, social geography of India and the world)
Paper III: General Studies II (250 marks)
Governance, Constitution, Polity, Social Justice, and International Relations
- Indian Constitution (features, amendments, significant provisions)
- Parliament and State Legislatures (structure, powers, functioning)
- Governance (welfare schemes, social sector developments)
- Issues of poverty, hunger, and human resource development
